Welcome to week two of my writing progress reports. Let’s get right down to it.

Rag & Bones: Secrets

Starting word count: 23,624. Aim: to increase wordcount by 3,000 words each day, Monday to Friday.

  • Monday: 26,627
  • Tuesday: 29,624
  • Wednesday: 32,285
  • Thursday: 34,074
  • Friday:35,597

Goal not achieved. Total wordcount: 11,973. Okay, so I didn’t achieve my target for this, but there is a reason for it. I got to the end of the story! Now, that doesn’t mean I’ve finished the first draft yet, but it does mean that I now have to go back and fill in all the gaps, where I glossed over things quickly, and to expand on the description in the places where I basically just have a conversation with no connecting words. That means progress next week will also be slower, so my target for Monday to Friday is 1,500 words per day, although I might manage more than this.

Sci-fi Novel

Starting word count: 10,146. Aim: To increase wordcount by 500 words each day, Monday to Friday.

  • Monday: 10,676
  • Tuesday: 11,157
  • Wednesday: 11,722
  • Thursday: 12,289
  • Friday: 12,764

Total wordcount: 2,618. Goal achieved. Target for next week is the same.

Rag & Bones Shorts: 1983

Aim: To perform an edit on this short over the weekend and to work on the cover.

  • Saturday: Electronic read-aloud software edit and conventional read through edit.
  • Sunday: Cover work and conversion of document to mobi format for next edit.

Goal achieved. Target for next week – to work on the book over the weekend and to have the book ready for publication by end of Sunday.

Reading

Aim: To monitor time spent reading over the week.

  • Monday: 2.75
  • Tuesday: 3.75
  • Wednesday: 3.25
  • Thursday: 4.25
  • Friday: 2.75
  • Saturday: 0.75
  • Sunday: 2.00

Total hours: 19.5

Progress Report: 06/01/2014 – 12/01/2014

So, here we go with my first progress report of the year. First, a bit of background.

I have three projects I am currently working on:

Rag & Bones: Secrets – This is book three in the Rag & Bones series and is a full-lenght novel, hopefully coming in at around 50K.

Rag & Bones Shorts – 1983 – This is a short story series to accompany the Rag & Bones series. These short stories will fill in some of the background to the characters and will be named by the year in which the action took place. They are approximately 10,000 words each.

Sci-fi Novel – This is the first book of a trilogy. I intend this one to be slightly longer than the Rag & Bones books at 60K. It does have a name, but I’m keeping that to myself for the moment. I’ve tried writing this story more than once before. I’m hoping this time will be the one that works!

So, here are the figures for this week.

Rag & Bones: Secrets

Starting word count: 8,700. Aim: to increase wordcount by 3,000 words each day, Monday to Friday.

  • Monday: 11.718
  • Tuesday: 14,615
  • Wednesday: 17,633
  • Thursday: 20,630
  • Friday: 23,624

Goal achieved. Total wordcount: 14,924. (You might think I didn’t achieve this on Tuesday, but I actually wrote more than 3,000 words as I deleted nearly 300 in one big chunk.)

Sci-fi Novel

Starting word count: 4,634. Aim: To increase wordcount by 500 words each day, Monday to Friday, and by 3,000 words on Saturday and Sunday. This was later adjusted to remove the Sunday wordcount completely.

  • Monday: 5142
  • Tuesday: 5,647
  • Wednesday: 6167
  • Thursday: 6,640
  • Friday: 7,157
  • Saturday: 10,146

Total wordcount: 5,512. Fewer words than I had originally planned, but still a good total.

Reading

Not properly monitored, but approximatley 2-3 hours each day.

So, apart from not writing on Sunday, which I had originally planned to do, but having achieved everything else, I felt I needed a break, I think I did pretty well. Next week’s Monday to Friday schedule is identical, but the weekend schedule involves editing the R&B Short, so wordcount will be down, but not the amount of work!

Time to Step it Up!

New Year is all about resolutions.

Well, maybe. In truth, there’s nothing special about New Year. You can decide to change things any time you like, but most people don’t. I guess it’s kind of a feeling that we’re all in it together if we decide to change something on 1 January.

Well, I am going to change something. I am going to try to post here regularly. I’m not going to commit to more than one post a week – let’s not be rash about this – but I am going to post, every Monday, a summary of my writing progress for the past week.

You’ll see that I now have some lovely progress meters on the left-hand side of the page. And you’ll also have deduced from those, that I currently have three projects on the go. The progress meters only chart the number of words, of course, not everything else that goes into having a finished product. This particular meter is one that’s meant for NaNoWriMo, but can be adapted to your own requirements. You can find it here if you’d like to use if yourself.

In addition to the progress meters, I intend to post details of how many words I write per day, and on which project. I’ve also decided to tally up how many hours I read each day (because I consider that to be part of writing), but I haven’t done that for the first week, so that will be missing from tomorrow’s post.

In addition to these projects, I also wrote a Drabble for a competition about New Year’s Resolutions. You can find it here. The competition is open until the end of the month, so if you want to enter, you can do so by using the competition link at the top of the page. You will have to log in to the site to do so, which you will also have to do if you want to vote for my story. Drabbles are exactly one hundred words, by the way, and the submission form does count them!

So, my first progress report will be posted tomorrow. See you then.
