Progress Report: 20/10/2014 – 26/10/2014

Welcome to week forty-two.

Rag & Bones 4: Kindred

This week was the final read-through before publication, which was achieved. I now have all three versions ready to go and will press the button at some point this week for the pre-order eBook files.

Other Projects

NaNoWriMo LogoOnce again, I spent some more time on the NaNo book. I’ve decided that I’m not going to go into much more detail about individual scenes until I start and then I’ll revise the next day’s scenes after I’ve finished the previous day’s count (if that makes sense). What I am going to do this week (well, five days of it) is to flesh out the ideas for books 2 and 3. I don’t mean going into individual scenes, but making sure that I know where this will be going so that I don’t have to go back and revise in that respect. I’ll also spend more time on the rules of the world, also so that I don’t have to go back and revise afterwards.

Of course, NaNo starts this coming Saturday, so what I’ll be doing from then on is pretty much set for the month – a minimum of 1,667 words per day. I expect some days to be up on the count and others to be down. I’m not setting myself an absolute target for the book. I hope for it to be 60K plus, but if that doesn’t work, at least in the first draft, I’m not going to worry. If I happen to get all the way through the first book, I might start the second, but the decision on that’s a long way off!

Reading

Aim: To monitor time spent reading over the week. I haven’t been treadmill reading for weeks now. I’m not sure why, but maybe it’s because I’m doing my 1.5 – 2 hours a day working standing up.

Progress Report: 13/10/2014 – 19/10/2014

Welcome to week forty-one.

Rag & Bones 5

As expected, I finished the first draft of Book 5 this week, and, also as expected, I added just under 10K words to the total. It now stands at 49,186. I’m now beginning to doubt whether it’ll end up at 65K words. I might have to revise that down to between 55 and 60K. However, I didn’t expect to add many more words to the current R&B Short – and that proved to be wrong.

R&B Short: 1978

I completed another edit this week and added nearly 2K words to the total. It now stands at close to the normal short target of 10K, at 9,799 words. It still needs another couple of reads yet, especially as I haven’t converted it into eBook format yet. I might do that this week, but it’s more likely to be the week after.

Other Projects

I spent more time on the NaNo novel this week. I understand a bit more about Scrivener now and how to use it. I’ve been putting together some character pages and locations and I’ve fleshed out the first few scenes a bit.

I’m not sure how much detail I want to go into with the scenes before I actually start. I want to be able to write it quickly, so that I reach my NaNo wordcount (obviously), but I don’t want to restrict myself too much. The R&B Book 5 was more planned out than anything I’d done before, the NaNo is already even more planned out than that was, and I’ve still got another week of time to plan further. In a way, I’d like to be starting it straight away and not thinking about it any more.

The other thing I’m wondering about is if I should transfer R&B 5 into Scrivener, because it still is in its early stages and there are many more drafts to do, and I’m pretty certain I’ll buy the software when the NaNo trial is up. Decisions. Decisions.

Progress Report: 06/10/2014 – 12/10/2014

Welcome to week forty.

Forty weeks I’ve been doing this. Doesn’t time fly? Isn’t Christmas close? Eek! Isn’t NaNoWriMo even closer? Double eek!

Rag & Bones 5

Editing of Book 5 is going well. I’m aiming for roughly ten pages per day (A4), and I’m on page 65, so that’s pretty good. Word count is now 45,498, so already on target for adding the 5-10K before the first draft is put to bed for NaNo. However, I haven’t added as much as I thought I might. For instance, I haven’t created any new scenes. As the page count is around 95 at the moment, I expect I’ll finish this round of edits before Friday. If I do, I’ll do another read through of the short that I started a few weeks back.

Other Projects

I’ve done quite a bit more planning for the NaNo novel this week, a large part of which involved downloading the NaNo trial version of Scrivener. It took me several hours to read through all the instructions for how to use it, and I was having a minor brain overload by the end of it, but I think I’ve got a handle on the basics now. I’m going to have to learn the short codes for changing fonts (ie headings, normal paras, block paras) or it’s going to drive me nuts having to use the menus all the time, but I think I like it. I’ve inputted all the scenes (so far) onto the corkboard and created separate documents for each one. I’ve even started to create documents for some of the characters and locations. I’m pretty sure I’ll pay for the full version after NaNo, especially as it’ll be 50% off if I complete the 50K words. At this stage, with R&B 5 finishing this week, I’ll be able to do the final round of R&B 4 the following week and have a whole week of NaNo prep afterwards.

Progress Report: 30/09/2014 – 05/10/2014

Welcome to week thirty-nine.

Here stands a soggy and windswept writer who, although it’s stormy outside, still took the dog for a walk. However, the walk was short, which means I’m here writing this at seven-thirty. Anyhow, let’s get on.

Rag & Bones 5

I have finished the first, first draft of the fifth book. For those who haven’t been here long, that meansĀ  bare-bones conversations and description-lacking mode. It stands at 39,437 words. The next two weeks will be spent fleshing it out to proper first draft mode, ready for its rest over NaNoWriMo month. Hopefully, I can add another 10-15K in that time bringing it to 10K off the final target. I’m not going to stick rigidly to that target, but as the fourth book is just over 72K, I think it’s reasonable.

Other Projects

Not much to tell on other things this week. I’m still doing my standing desk working, sometimes for as long as two hours (all in one chunk, once I’ve sat down, that’s pretty much it). This week I’ll have my admin Sunday, so that’ll be getting accounts and such like up-to-date. I’d also like to get a little more planning done for my NaNo novel. I’m not sure if I told you that I’ve got the basic story already set out, but I think I need to make it more detailed if I’m going to achieve finishing it in the month. I’d like to be able to reach higher than the 50K target.
