Progress Report: 17/11/2014 – 23/11/2014

Welcome to week forty-six.

NaNoWriMo

91,558 words.

If you’re reading this at any time after first thing on Monday (which is impossible because this won’t post till one!) the counter below will probably say something different (which is a good thing!).

Only one more week to go!

This weeks progress has been a little up and down. There were points at which I was over the 4K per day target again, mainly due to doing 5.5K words on Wednesday, but the total has dropped back a little again, mainly due to me struggling to progress the story on Saturday and Sunday.

I know for a fact that there will be scenes that will end up in the trash folder because there are points at which I’ve simply been writing something in order to see where I could push the story. Luckily, I think I’ve now found a route, which wasn’t something I’d even thought of before. The thing is, I know how the story ends – I’ve pretty much known that from the beginning – but it’s getting to that point that’s the problem.

As it stands I have Book One pretty well drafted at 45.5K. Book Two is more a series of scenes that need to be strung together and comes in at about 30K. Book Three is just over 10K and is a jumble of ideas thrown together. But, I have a place to start when I go back to revise – and that’s the whole point.

Let’s see if I can get to that 120K by the end of the week.

Welcome to week forty-five.

NaNoWriMo

61,615 words. Okay, so that’s not quite 4K words a day, I know, but it’s still over 3.9K words.

If you’re reading this at any time after first thing on Monday (which is impossible because this won’t post till one!) the counter below will probably say something different (which is a good thing!).

As I said last week, I was starting on the rough draft of book two. That went well, but as I also said, it was going to be a bit sketchy, and it was. Therefore, on Friday, I was in danger of lacking the impetus to go forward, so I decided to go back to the beginning of book one and start working through, updating with extra material and filling it out a bit. This is where I dipped below the 4K words a day, but each day was over 3K, and probably closer to 3.5K. I’m pretty far through book one, so I’ll continue with that today (and possibly part of tomorrow) before getting back to book two. I still aim to start a rough draft of book three on day twenty.

Welcome to week forty-four.

NaNoWriMo

36,017 words. Phew! Sunday was a struggle, but after nine days, I’ve managed to maintain an average of 4K words per day.

OMG, as they say.

If you’re reading this at any time after first thing on Monday (which is impossible because this won’t post till one!) the counter below will probably say something different (which is a good thing!).

I have already gone through the whole storyline for Book One and have started to do the first draft edit. However, I have also (on Sunday), plunged into the beginning of book two. Call me mad, but I’ve now set myself a crazy target of having first drafts of the whole three-book series completed by the end of the month. Seeing as I haven’t plotted out books two and three in anything more than a few sentences, that could be a little difficult. Hmm!

What I expect I’ll end up with is a lot of disconnected scenes where I’ll have to fill in the gaps, but that’s fine.

The reason I want to continue on (allowing roughly ten days per book), is so that I can iron out any inconsistencies in one fell swoop. I’m also aware that some successful indies recommend publishing trilogy books as close to one another as possible (every two to four weeks), to take advantage of the 30 day boost Amazon gives to new books. By next weekend I should have a fair idea of whether or not I’m going to come close to the three book target. Of course, at 4K per day, that would mean 120K in the month. Urgh!

Progress Report: 27/10/2014 – 02/11/2014

Welcome to week forty-three.

I’m writing most of this on Friday, so I won’t have to waste too much of my NaNoWriMo time on Monday. I have to say that right now, I’m champing at the bit to get going. Anyway, I’ll do a NaNo report down the page. First, the other stuff.

Rag & Bones Short: 1978

I did another edit of this during the week and I’ve added another 500 odd words. It’s now over the 10K mark. I probably won’t touch this again until after NaNo has finished, but I’m a lot happier with it now than I was a few weeks back.

NaNoWriMo

Most of the week has been spent in the planning phase, but planning did drive me a little crazy. I now have a rough idea of what all three books in the series would cover. I have a much expanded ‘World’ document. I have brief character studies for all the characters I’ve thought of so far, although any others would be minor, along with pictures of what I imagine them to look like.

NaNo progress

Two days down and, as you can see, 9455 words in. Obviously, that’s way over the daily target, but there will be at least one interruption to my writing this week, and I prefer to get ahead with these things. I wrote slightly more words on Saturday than Sunday, but the difference was minimal.

The planned structure is keeping me on track, but I’ve already changed it quite a bit. Some events have happened earlier than I planned and extra scenes have appeared, as if by magic! Yesterday evening, after a bit of a break, I started revising the text from the beginning. About 500 extra words are from that revision. I think my ambition of editing the whole of the previous day’s work was a little excessive, but if I can progress a little each day, I’ll be happy with that.

Okay, must get on with that writing.

Other Projects

Nothing to report this week.
