Progress Report: 22/06/2015 – 28/06/2015

Welcome to week twenty-six.

Nano Project Book One

I did a complete read out loud on the Kindle for this book, this week, at 0.7x speed. It’s going to sit now until I’ve finished with Book Two and then I’ll do a faster read out loud. Next week I’ll be doing a normal Kindle read on Book Two. If I finish that, I’ll start on a read out loud.

Fantasy Book 1

I did nothing on this book this week.

Fantasy Book 2

I did nothing on this book this week.

Other Projects

I said I was going to write some short stories this week, and I did! One I wrote for a competition, deadline of Thursday, so I didn’t have much time to edit it. Luckily, it was only 2.5K words. I wrote two more, neither of which are past first draft level. One I think is promising, the other maybe not so. No idea where I will submit them to when they’re done. We’ll see.

This week, as my second task, I’m going to work on paperback copies of some of the books I haven’t done yet. If I can get two done, that’ll be good going.

Progress Report: 15/06/2015 – 21/06/2015

Welcome to week twenty-five.

Well, we’ve passed the longest day. It’s all downhill from here!

Nano Project (Books One & Two)

Much to my surprise, I finished the first edit of Book Two on Monday. This meant that I could do all the inconsistency checks on Tuesday and start the next edit of Book Two, which I have also finished. Trouble is, I now have loads of consistency checking to do (again!). This should be the last round of that, though. It may take a couple of days to do, but then I’ll start the Kindle read out loud of Book One.

Fantasy Book 1

I did nothing on this book this week.

Fantasy Book 2

I did nothing on this book this week.

Other Projects

I’ve had notification that the short story I submitted has got through to the second round of consideration, which I’m extremely pleased about. At least, if it doesn’t get through to publication, I know I have a story I can try elsewhere.

I spent some time on Sunday tweaking things on my website. It’s surprising how long even small things can take. Oh, well.

With regards to reading, I’ve been doing a lot of listening to books with my Kindle reading them out at 2x speed. It’s meant I’ve been able to get a lot of stuff done around the house, which I would otherwise have put off. It’s also helped me to get through all those books that have been sitting on my Kindle for over a year. Sometimes, I’ve even listened at 3x. It takes a bit of getting used to, and I wouldn’t do it for long periods, but if the book is well written, it’s easy enough to understand. You do have to concentrate, though. It also makes 2x seem slow if you play it afterwards!

This coming week, as well as doing the read out loud already mentioned, I’m going to try writing some short stories. Maybe not one a day, but I should be able to manage one every couple of days, as long as they’re not too long.

Thoughts on the New KU Payout Structure

I’m sure everyone’s heard about the new KU payouts for authors, starting next month. If you haven’t, they’re going to start paying on number of pages read, not passing 10%. Some people think it’s a positive step, others see it as negative. I suppose that depends on the length of the books they have in the programme.

But, let’s not forget that Amazon’s ultimate aim is to benefit Amazon. They need to make money.

The thing is, when you have an all-you-can-eat subscription service, you don’t care about finishing books. You might read beyond the ten per cent, because that’s only 30 pages in a 300 page book. But if you decide you don’t like the book and you’re a quarter of the way through, or half way, you can just give up on it and try something else. It doesn’t cost you any more.

Amazon already knows how many books are abandoned, and exactly where.

I imagine there will be a significant number of authors who are shocked by how many people abandon their books a long way from the end and how little money they will now make.

Is it fair? Yes, and no. It is fair that if you have a great book that people can’t put down, that you are properly compensated for that. But, if someone bought the individual book, you’d get paid for the complete book, even if it was abandoned.

This is the digital age, and things change every day. Everyone who wants to be a success in KU is going to have to start writing page-turners. I wonder how long it will be before the other subscription services decide to do something similar.

Progress Report: 08/06/2015 – 14/06/2015

Welcome to week twenty-four.

Yay! The car passed its MOT. Yay! It didn’t need any extra work. Boo! It still cost me a lot of money.

Taking the car in on Wednesday didn’t disrupt my day as much as I thought it would, luckily, and it was a nice sunny day for walking from and to town, so that was good. Anyway, on to the writing.

Nano Project (Books One & Two)

My task for this week was to do a Kindle read of Book One and an edit of Book Two. Okay, so this started off fine, but by Friday, I was getting very confused with timelines and where things happened in the two books. So, on Saturday and Sunday I finished the read of Book One and totally ignored Book Two. I’m probably about two-thirds of the way through Book Two. I’m still changing quite a bit, so Book Two is going to need at least one more normal editing pass. I intend to finish this pass by Tuesday or Wednesday of the coming week, and then I have a number of queries back and forth between the two books that I need to sort out. Then, I’ll start another edit on Book Two without any gap. I want to have both books published in eBook form by the middle of July (One available straightaway and Two on pre-order), so I should have enough time – that’s another month.

Fantasy Book 1

I did nothing on this book this week.

Fantasy Book 2

I did nothing on this book this week. I may spend some time on this book in the coming week.

Other Projects

Nothing to report.

Progress Report: 01/06/2015 – 07/06/2015

Welcome to week twenty-three.

Even though I was away for Monday morning, this week has turned out to be a productive week. Once again, I didn’t do quite what I’d planned! In the coming week I have the car’s service and MOT to disrupt proceedings, which will take quite a chunk out of my day on Wednesday.

Nano Project (Books One & Two)

I managed a complete edit on Book One this week, which was a lot quicker than I expected, but then I have been through Book One quite a few times. I had a number of consistency queries, which I wrote down and went back over on Saturday. Book One now stands at 62K. On Sunday, I started on Book Two. If I can, I’ll finish one edit this week at the same time as doing a Kindle read-through on Book One. I’ll do the editing first, when I’m fresher, and the reading later.

Fantasy Book 1

I did nothing on this book this week.

Fantasy Book 2

I expected to do more work on this book this week, but I only worked on it once. I was more in the mood for doing the Nano book, so I did!

Other Projects

The short story I wrote a couple of weeks ago was submitted this week. It could be up to five weeks before I hear anything. I also received an e-mail stating that an anthology for which I had a story accepted, must be two years ago now, will be published soon. Hurrah!

I have also started another short story, which I intend to be a bit longer and I have an idea of where I might try with it if I finish it, but not certain at the moment.

Progress Report: 25/05/2015 – 31/05/2015

Welcome to week twenty-two.

Once again, I’m writing this early. Not because of a holiday this time, but because of a small family emergency. Naturally, the amount of work/reading I’ve done has been slightly curtailed, and may be in the coming week as well.

Nano Project (Book Three)

Okay, so you might remember that the Nano project started as three books, got condensed to two, and then I thought of another possible three. This was the week I started working on Three. This was also the week I stopped working on Three. After three days of working on it (that’s a lot of threes!), I decided it just wasn’t working. I was trying to force an extra story out of it and it felt that way. So, it will be a duology, not a trilogy. I hope to start working on the editing again for Books One and Two next week.

Fantasy Book 1

I did nothing on this book this week.

Fantasy Book 2

The slack from the Nano project was taken up by this book. It is now around 22K. It may be slightly more by the end of today (Sunday), as I’m intending to work on it later, but I won’t update here. I intend this to be my secondary project next week.

Other Projects

I finished uploading my story to Wattpad on Friday. I hope to start reading a bit more on there again in the coming week.
